Making Handcrafted Custom Made Furniture For Over Thirty Five Years.

Geoff Willing went into business making handcrafted, custom made furniture over thirty five years ago. He has been enthralled by the beauty and the possibilities that the grain of each piece of timber presents and he has continued making furniture, either full time or part-time, over the period between then and now. Soon after going into business Geoff won awards for his woodcraft at a local level in north-east Victoria.

It was, however, in 1988 that Geoff won a major award at Beaver Galleries, Canberra, winning the Annual Award Exhibition titled, “The Finishing Touch”. His winning exhibit was an Australian red cedar blanket chest with a coopered lid.
Later that year Geoff designed and made three pieces of furniture for the group exhibition titled, “Exhibition Oregon”, which was held at the Royal Exhibition Buildings, Melbourne. This exhibition utilised the former oregon bearers of the Great Hall of the Royal Exhibition Buildings. The bearers were transformed into a range of functional and decorative objects.

In 1989 Geoff designed and produced two pieces of furniture for the Australian Furniture Design Awards, held at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne. To Geoff, a well-proportioned design that highlights the beauty of the wood is what it is all about, whether it be a piece of functional furniture or a woodcraft item. The main timber used is blackwood. Redgum, alpine ash, walnut, huon pine and hoop pine are examples of other timbers used. Geoff can produce plans and quotes for custom made furniture. Traditional joinery methods are complemented with modern techniques and processes. He makes a wide range of furniture items and specialises in coffee tables, side tables and production runs of small boxes and containers.

Items are polished to produce a smooth finish that highlights the beauty of the grain of the wood. Geoff’s workshop is based at Eurobin, in North East Victoria, and visitation is by appointment.

In about 1997 the first walnut, chestnut, and pecan trees were planted. The deep, rich soil and high rainfall make Eurobin a perfect place to grow such nut trees. But more than that, a sustainable approach occurs with soil and tree management. Nuts are harvested in small batches and walnuts and pecans are cool dried to create products with great flavour and health benefits.

Nuts About Wood

Where patience yields quality
Highlighting the natural beauty of timber
Growing produce with great taste and health benefits.

A lot of preparation goes into producing quality nuts and, in each season, there are tasks to do to get the balance right. It is always exciting to see the initial cracking of the husks and to taste the first nuts of each nut variety.
